What brought a tragic end to Kurt Cobain’s life?
Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana, was found dead at his home, located at 171 Lake Washington Boulevard East in Seattle, Washington, on April 8, 1994. Forensic analysis determined that he had committed suicide three days earlier on April 5.
The Seattle Police Department incidents report states: “Kurt Cobain was found with a shotgun across his body, had a visible head wound and there was a suicide note discovered nearby.”
His self-inflicted shotgun wound did so much damage to his head that police could only identify his body through fingerprints. Dental records were of no use, because nothing was left of his mouth. The King County Medical Examiner noted puncture wounds on the inside of both the right and left elbow. Prior to his death, Cobain had checked out of a drug rehabilitation facility and had been reported as suicidal by his wife Courtney Love.
Despite the official ruling of suicide, several theories have arisen of alternate explanations for Cobain’s death. Advocates of the verdict of death by self-inflicted gunshot wound cite Cobain’s persistent drug addiction, clinical depression, and handwritten suicide note as conclusive proof.
In the days leading up to Cobain’s suicide, plenty of family and friends had expressed concern for the rock star, who wasn’t returning anyone’s calls — his mother, Wendy O’Connor filed a missing person’s report, and his wife Courtney Love, who was herself detoxing from drugs at the time, hired a private investigator to try and track him down.
His funeral was a strong indication of what late Kurt Cobain was about to become. Seven thousand Seattleites gathered in a memorial service for him – venting their sense of betrayal by chanting a chorus of “Fu*k You, Kurt”, led by the star’s widow, punk singer Courtney Love – they all felt they had lost something special. They were angry he did this to himself – and to them. “Kurt died for your sins,” shouted one overwrought fan to his fellow mourners. Another showed off the K-U-R-T scar she had razored on to her wrist. There was a ritual burning of flannel shirts, the trademark garment of grunge.
Kurt Cobain has since remained the symbol of troubled young souls.
