The names “Usama” and “Osama” are both used to refer to the same person, Osama bin Laden, a former leader of al-Qaeda. While “Osama” is the more commonly used spelling in English, “Usama” is also a valid transliteration of the Arabic name.
Here’s why both spellings are used:
- Arabic Transliteration: The Arabic name, أسامة (ʾusāmah), can be transliterated into English in different ways. While “Osama” is the most common, “Usama” is also a legitimate way to represent the sound of the name.
- Consistent Usage: Both spellings have been used bl different U.S. government agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
